hey everyone!
So did anybody play FF7 growing up? It was the first real RPG I loved and I would draw the characters from the game in my sketchbook all the time. Welp, one of my favorite illustrators, Sam Bosma has been making a ton of these character illustrations and I felt obligated to ripe off the idea. OH MY GLOB, where have i been!?
hey everyone, ok, so it has been a very long time since my last post, i apologize. BUT i have been busy, and I don't really know where to start.
Greta, Madison, Lucy and I moved to the upper west side/manhattan valley, we have a great apartment on the 5th floor with no elevator.
I have recently been working mostly in my sketchbook, partially as a way to procrastinate but mostly to come up with new ideas and try out new things. here are some high lights

Hey everyone!
guess what? we're moving! of course we are, its been an entire year, so we have to move. sadly, my roommates and I will all be departing and going to our respective corners of manhattan. but the best part is, Greta and I are moving in together! So it will be a full house, 2 humans, 2 dogs, and 1 rabbit. we almost added a cat to the equation too. we found a little abandoned kitten on the street today and took her in to feed her and clean her up. Thankfully Greta's neighbors took her in and are going to give her a good home. So yeah, lots going on. Here's the third "birds" piece.

The color was pretty challenging but rewarding. There will be another one soon enough, i will try to finish it before we move. Im out!

Summer time

hey everyone!
Guess who got a puppy! about two weeks ago I brought home a Mini Schnauzer! Her name is Madison and shes solid black with cropped ears, and is Adorable. She is still very young so training will take a little bit of time, but I don't really mind because of how cute she is.
I finally finished the second "Birds" piece last week. The background was surprisingly challenging to do.

Also, here is another Tooth! remember to floss.

I did another piece for Thump, the rabbit magazine, this was for an article about why your rabbit doesn't like to be picked up. pretty straight forward.

More to come, I think i have the color scheme figured out for my swamp monster painting, and i i should be starting another bird painting this week.

Hey everyone!
This is shaping up to be a great summer, Surfing, Sunday brunch, movies in the park, tons of mexican food, and lots of sun.

hey everyone!
The summer is in full swing! greta and i have been going to the dog park with her pup lucy almost everyday, its nice enough to go for a run, and i am trying to hit up every park in the city.
heres the first piece from my new series "birds", which is actually my first real series contribution to our art collective, Flying Fortress

To help kick off our launch we had a gallery party at our place and we sold a lot of pieces along side friends. It was pretty awesome. Here are two pieces i made for special for the gallery. I was really happy with how they came out

and the finals. The are titled from left to right "The Cowards" and "The Outcast", both only 4 x 6, pretty small. my buddy matt keeps pushing me to work larger, so i think for my next paintings i will try to expand.

hey everyone,
it's officially nice out, and its awesome. greta and i have been going to the small dog park with her pup lucy, and it's a lot of fun. It's really its own culture in the city. Im thinking of making a piece about the small dog parks in the city, though i have no idea what its going to be. anywho, ive been keeping a new stick regiment of drawing for my self everyday, things for work do not count. its been going super well. hey everyone!
been a little while since my last post, super busy with work and fighting off the cold. here's a collection of superheros i made for (of all things) an asthma medication. these are my favorites out of the final 14 i made. these were great to make, but I literally haven't drawn superheros since i was in Jr. High, in case you can't tell.

Hey everyone!
It's the New Year! Yeah! And this is officially my first post of the new year.
Here is my Year is recap, though I may be forgetting key things, Its been pretty great.

My awesome girlfriend moved to new york, and now lives 8 minutes up the road!
Moved back to brookyln

I got to work for Honest Tea, Smuckers, A drug company that makes pills for Premature ejeculations, The Next Iron Chef, and a bunch of others
I saw the gorillaz live
re-did my website (though i want to redo it again)
Matador had is first birthday with me! (he had fresh parsley and yogurt treats to celebrate)
anyways, here is a drawing i made for my mom for christmas of owls.

And here is a drawing of a birds nest i drew while home for the holiday. I got caught i that awesome snow storm for a day. I'm pretty proud of this drawing

heres another piece from my sketch book, i was painting one of my favorite places back home from my head. Its a small farm that is middle of the four neighboring towns. I always loved watching the three radio towers off in the distance.

hey everyone!
so i am finally back in brooklyn after spending christmas back home in Rhode Island and Mass, and there seems to be entire mountain ranges of snow EVERYWHERE. its pretty amazing really.
so here are some more illustrations i did for the premature ejaculation project. i was pretty happy with doing them in this style, and it was a lot of fun using colors I don't normally use.

Here are some more of the Honest Tea illustrations i made as well. These were fun but pretty simple, and where treated with text afterwords. Hopefully i can get my hands on the finals with text soon.

And Finally! here is another matador final. There are actually a few small things I would like add (mostly just highlights on the matadors outfit) but still, here is the progress.

hey everyone
happy holidays! i just realized im going home for christmas at the end of the week and i dont have a single gift purchased yet. oh well! so the past two weeks i got a lot of illustration work which is fantastic, though my matador paintings had to take the back burner for a little bit. i have four completed and one more thats 90% finished though, so im pretty pumped. any who, here are some simple illustrations ive done recently, these first three are for Honest Tea

and some super quick berries

here one out of 14 pieces i did on the disease Vasculitis. Its based off a story form some one breaking through the barriers of the disease. it was really great making these, even if they wanted an edward gorey style (which kills my hand after a while)

and finally I am doing some illustrations for Smuckers, which is pretty awesome. very simple childrens book style, heres a sketch for one of the pieces

hey everyone
i am finally back to painting my matadors! i didnt realize how long a break i took until i set out my paints for them. oh well, feels good to get back and i feel pretty determined to finish them quickly. here is a not so great color corrected one

i dont have any good pictures yet, but heres a quick snapshot form my phone of the signs i made for this new juice bar called the fresh collective. i had to do all the tiny lettering by hand, not so fun.

i discovered this old film composer, Sven Libaek, who did great music for old nature and exploration documentaries (wes anderson used a few of his songs in the life aquatic), and man, its good. i made these color/texture studies the other night inspired by his soundtrack, inner space. i think i will use them for backgrounds in some paints soon.

its been a while since my last post, i know! i havent been keeping up with the every friday thing. But! lots of things going on, recently moved back to brooklyn! We have a great place with cool bars in walking distance, and the city close by. Hey everyone,
So I'm trying to keep up with posting on this blog every friday, but i last week i was too busy friday with work and was out and about all weekend, so i was going to post when i had a moments free time. That moments free time turned out to the following friday, ie today. oh well, my bad.

Hey everyone
I am officially out of shape. So this past sunday i helped Greta move into her new apartment and after only an hour and one flight of stairs i was dying a horrible death. I need to fix this if i plan on moving next month for sure. luckily I am running again, which hasn't been the worst thing ever!
Any who, heres some stuff from the vault and sketchbooks. the two octopus drawings are from the diptych series I'm making with my roommate. Still have no idea how these are getting executed but we will worry about later.

Here are some studies of bulls Ive made when its too late at night to start seriously painting, so late that some times the bulls turn into buffalo's.

I like drawing birds too.

Hey everyone,
So my girlfriend and i saw Scott pilgrim last weekend, and is was amazing. SO GOOD. I also picked up the last book and was pretty happy with it. I especially liked Negascott. And in Much bigger news, my sister-in-law just gave birth to her and brothers first kid! her name is Margaret Lynn and is so tiny and adorable! I can't wait till i can go visit and meet my new niece.

The Matador sketches

Hey everyone!!
Oh wow, it's been a reeeally long time since my last post, sorry about that. As the usual I've been very busy, had a few story boarding and freelancing jobs, did illustrations for a whole website and sketching and drawing for myself when i get a free moment to breath.
Here are a few drawings from my matador series as well as a full painted one, I almost have the whole thing figured out, slow and steady.

I've also been working on a collaboration with my roommate/best bud Michael Ricca. The project is going to be diptychs of nudes and octopi/squids. I will be providing the octopi. Its been alot of fun working on it together and should have a nice out come. I'll have some of my roughs up soon.
Sadly my roommates and i will be moving soon, but back to Brooklyn. As nice as living in manhattan is i will be glad to leave the $400 tax behind.

Went to Mocca this past weekend and had a blast! lots of great artists and comics, though after aobut 4 hours i couldnt look at anything anymore. It was pretty motivating, and if i can gather the right people i might be interested in getting a booth next year to sell stuff. we will see.
I finally finished the Zombie painting, came out pretty sweet! hes sitting in a bed of Chrysanthemums which symbolize death in some countries. hes also eating a foot as his guts spill out. probably the most brutal thing ive painting, but tons of fun to actually paint!

I went to the "Illustration Next" lecture hosted by my old portfolio teacher, Steve Brodner tonight, and wow, i feel motivated! The lecture was great as expected, lots of talented people talking about their non-traditional jobs and projects in the world of art, and where the future of illustration is heading. i was a bit nervous it would be overwhelming, but quiet the opposite, the second i started talking to people when i got there i felt better, even excited. time to kick some serious ass.
anywho, ive been working on my old series on Matadors again, here is a sneaky peak at one of the final drawings (sorry for the poor scans)

Hey everyone!
Oh wow! its been forever since my last post! Sorry for the long delay, been busy and keep forgetting to post. Some exciting news, my new website is Finally up! you know the place www.erichosford.com check it out, got a ton of stuff and sweet sketchbook section. there will be a bunch of minor tweeks, but i have to get CS 3 or 4 onto my computer again. oh yeah, my computer died a few weeks ago. i think the steam from my radiator killed the harddrive, making me hate winter even more. i lost all my files and awesome applications, so sad. i did purchase a external hard drive so as to avoid this issue again.
in other news i am making serious efforts to find a new job. it looks a bit grim with the economy (oh wow i sound like an actual adult) but i need to be making better money.

hey everyone
ahh wow, its been a while since my last post on here. busy as usual, greta and i celebrated our one year anniversary last weekend :) it was filled with amazing food, fantastic drinks (i had a whiskey lit on fire! so cool) a trip to the 102nd floor of the empire state building at 1 AM, and a trip to the adoption center to get our first bunny! we adopted a 3 year old netherland dwarf rabbit, his name is matador (hes currently napping in his play pen). we have a blog about him here raising matador we also made friends with this very nice guy at a speakeasy (our fist adult friend who isn't related to us) so it was a pretty awesome weekend.

in other news, im going to have 4 small paintings in a group show this wednesday at destination NY, which is at 32-36 Little West 12th Street. the opening goes from 6-8 and the show is open until January 10th. check it out if you can! here are two things in the show.

so ive started yet another series called insecta botanica, basiclly its exactly what it sounds like, flowers and bugs. i was able to make one for the show which was pretty simple and fun. i want to make a ton and decorate my apartment with them.
ive also been making my new website (about time!) so that should be up in a week or two.

hey everyone,
just wanted to toss up a quick post. finished my house ghost painting, made a dead octopus and drew a pretty sweet matador for my new short series on bull fighting. here are two out of the three!

(ugh, i have such a hard time getting dark blue to look right in the computer. this is pretty close though)

when i get a good footing on paper i will post the matador sketches. there will be about 5-6 paintings in all. i want to show the unpalatable violence bull fighting and the cruelty to the animals and how it is decorated with flashy showmanship. serious, right?

hey everyone
so the past weekend we had the opening for the halloween art show up in boston, and it was pretty awesome. it was just a few of us in the show, and we actually had a sponsor, bear flag wine, and then there was a showing of "night of the living dead" at a bar/restaurant down the street on newbury. i gotta say, as much as i love new york, boston is sooo much cleaner and nicer looking. man, new york is a dump.

hey everyone,
oh man! its the summer finally! the nice weather has been like new life breathed into my desire to draw and paint and make things. its wonderful. so i have been collecting a ton of comics lately, i started reading lone wolf and cub on the bus rides, and good gos is it an amazing comic.

hey everyone
here are two paintings, both gifts, i finally finished. guess which is for a 5 month old baby?

this one is entitled "old dogs" these are irish wolf hounds, they're like giant dr suess versions of wolves, awesome dogs.

this one was a commissions for one of the brokers i work with for her little boy andreas, adorable little guy! thats him amongst the animals.

here are two recent pages from my sketch book as well.

im working on some new sketches for some more back to basics illustrations as well as a sketches for a idea im kicking around thats about kids, anime and abstraction. not really sure what i want to do with it, but that will come with time. more sketches and paintings to come.

hey everyone,
I have this idea, to do a drawing a day. in perfect fairness, many people have had this idea, but that is besides the point. and i almost always draw something everyday, some times for many hours (as one of my jobs is kind enough to ask that of me), but that is also besides the point.
the point is to push my own personal drawings to be more fun, more creative, and more more.
i miss generating the volume of work i did when i started making this whole thing. and i am not afraid of losing the quality in the quantity, for fear in art is a thing of the past. i am excited for the future, as i usually am in the world.
now, as far as posting goes, i highly doubt i am diligent enough to post everyday, maybe not ever every week, but i will do my best to post each drawing, regardless of how much time i spent on it.
i'm not really sure how long i will do this for, but i imagine i will stop sooner than later, but no worries.
anywho, i havent scanned anything new in for a while, but i promise, i will have tons to show later!

hey everyone
oh jeez oh man, the gallery opening is finally over! the seemed to go pretty well, thank you to all who came out. now that the dust has settled i have two new pieces im already working on. one, is a piece to trade with a friend, and the other to show my love for neville longbottom, which is actually more of a call back to editorial style. im starting to miss working in the mind set, and i kinda want to get more free lance coming in so i better hop on the good foot. (as i will be having to pay for a pet rabbit soon) anyways, enjoy!

heres a little number for no reason

this is a painting i did for one of the kids my mom use to take care of at day care, she was one of my moms best kids and i would baby sitter her every now and then. she is sick, so my prayers and best wishes go to her!

and finally, heres is a new sketch for painting im making for a friend for our art trade. fun times.

i will start painting my other pieces ive had cooking for a while as soon as this one is done, so hopefully by this weekend i will be under way. yeah!

hey all
man oh man its been a while since my last post! been super busy with work and family and girlfriend, so i havent been paying much attention to this here blog. plus, i dont have too much new good stuff, this past month has been a slow art month for me, but feb will fix that
heres a painting i made for myself, of jelly fish of course.

here are two paintings i did for these graffiti bags i was hired to do, they're pretty simple, nothing too exciting.

so i am finally back in new york after going back to RI for christmas to see my mom and the relatives, still waiting for my brothers to be home so we can have christmas part II.

so while i havent dont anything in the past few days, here are some things i did as gifts for people.

I have work in my first gallery show since graduation! very exciting. the opening reception was this past thursday, thank you to all of those who came out, and for those who couldn't make it you should go check it out! the show is at destination NY. the show will but up until dec 30th.

so i just looked back on my last painting and realized the colors were way off. so i corrected them! here it is, all fixed up nice.

hey all,
here is my most recent painting from the series peer pressure/bad vibrations, its finally done! spent a great deal of time painting this one, figuring out the colors was a bit challenging as well as rendering her face, but it was a lot of fun. ive already started the drawing for the next one, and will be starting it some time next week when i get some free time. heading back home to RI to help my mom out with some things, which should recharge my creative juices and refresh my lungs.

hey all,
as usual, been very busy with everything, painting, working, galleries, traveling and the like. for those who havent seen it and can, you should go check out the four person show at destination featuring our buddy john ryan solis. and of those in pennsylvania (any one?) you need to see jake smileys solo show. both great work.
so as promised, here are some photos of my work at rickys near union square. the faces a little fucked up but im not really bothered by it.

here is a watercolor portrait i did for a company, may get used for something, but not really sure. so watercolor really isnt my thing and i dont have that much practice with it, but i was pretty pleased with the way this came out.

and to bring in the full circle of what ive been up to, here is the birthday card i made for my friend. super cute. had a lot of fun making this one.

oh, the top says "happy birthday" in japanese.

im currently working on a bunch of illustrations for a bag line for the UFC thats taking up most my free time, but there will be a new painting from the peer pressure/bad vibrations very soon. also, im toying with two other ideas for a a short series of paintings for the near future. one on phone booths in the city (for no real reason other than to get better and painting and scenery) and the other "how you make me feel", a fun personal project with the intent for others to be able to relate it to their own experiences.

so as promised, here is my most recent painting from the on going series peer pressure/bad vibrations. the piece is entitled "panic obscura". as you can guess, its about drugs. it is also about the convenience of modern life during adolescence. the colors are a bit off though, cant seem to get the scanner to do what i want lately!

also, here is are some more sea creatures from the deep. one is a gift for a friend which will be mailed out super soon, promise!

in other news my illustrations i had done for the hair salon shears hustle and blow are up in the window of the store rickys on 3rd ave at 14th st!! i will have pictures to show off soon.

so as an illustrator, ive been trying to figure out what it is that i want to illustrate and display in my work. its always been a point of worry for me, not finding a spot i was comfortable with or felt honest in. it seems like a lot of fuss over finding out what it is that i really just want to do when the answer is as simple as just doing what it is i want to do. but the details ive been hung up.
a few days ago i had read a hand full of old journal entries i had made about nothing in particular, but they all had a reoccurring theme. that is im overly enthusiastic in a very unadulterated way about my interests. i realized i was rarely wavered by others apathy. and for a moment i felt i had become someone other than myself. but then i remembered that totally stupid and that i will always be the over enthusiastic romantic, just now im older and more is on the line, but i have more ability to pull out of the dangers i may face. i am an observer and an appreciator, i view the world romantically and try to understand the foreign. I feel sure of my self, but with out thinking of my self at all.
anyways, as this translates into illustration and work, i feel that subjects like anxiety, love, confusion, adolescence, cuteness, and energy really interest me, and i feel an infinite sea if idea in those places. this whole thing will take time and more thought and more struggle, but thats part of the adventure to it. bring it

anywho still havent fixed or finished any painting paintings, been doing tons of other things, lots of shit happening. but here are some exerts from my sketchbook. these are all done while riding the subway.

labor day weekend is finally over, spent it the most appropriate fashion. went to the prospect park zoo (which is now a short walk from my place!) and got to see a ton of monkeys and the fat lazy red panda. so there will be some cute animals popping up here in the near future.

hey every one,
i am finally back from my vacation/graduation travels. went to alaska to see my brother and then to san francisco to visit some friends and figure out if i ever want to live there. and i do, i think i will move to SF at some point in the future, maybe in bout 4-5 years if i can. either there or boston, either way i cant stay in NY forever.
so i got tons of new ideas for my two on going series, a loveless haunting and peer pressure/bad vibrations. i will be painting them as soon as i get a moment to my self. i finished two so far from peer pressure/bad vibrations which will be up soon. in the mean time have some elephants.

some note worthy news, im moving into my new apartment this sunday, singing the lease tomorrow. will be living with two good friends. there will be roof parties and food grilling and maybe a pool table if we're get this shit together. but for now i got to get over some sweet jet lag eat tons of food.

hey all,
our portfolio class had its last class together as a group, (next week have the portfolio review with our chairman.) very touching, it's strange to think i will no long be going to a class with my peers and looking at fresh work regularly. granted it was depressing when someone would not care about being there and have crappy work and then defend it like they actually cared. that i wont miss, but the handful of those who's work i enjoyed and admired made it worth while. those few helped to shape my own development, giving me rough guide lines i could use if i found myself lost.
but this isn't so much the end of something, it's more the opportunity to develop our own community and support those we actually care about, with out paying fact cash loan moneys. the prospect of getting a studio and studio mates makes me awesomely excited, even if thats not for a little while.

anyways, heres a piece i did for class, we had to show a subculture/cultural group, so i chose mods from the 60's and 70's. they all have sweet vespas and parkas. this was actually a pain in the ass to paint, but i felt i learned a lot from it.

also, these are sketches for an illustration i did for class on Ted Leo, the final was a silk screen which came out all right, but still think it can be done better, so i think i will paint it (even though that will take a crazy ass long time. mad crowds.

i seem to be addicted to putting up new posts on this thing, which may be result of being stuck in my building for the past 4 nights in a row. heres a page from an old sketch book, done in brush pens.

also, heres another piece from my ghosts series. i not really sure if this one is done completely or not. i still might add another element to it, just not sure what yet.

also, finally got my sloth book sent out on iphoto. what im doing is making a mock book to use a proposal device to make it into an actual publication. i have 12 panels completed and the rest of the pages are just the rough sketches just so they can see what the story is about. should be here in about a week! i hope it doesn't look lame!

hey all,
ive been on duty all weekend (RA duty for the dorms) and im soooo bored! i just want to get to the studios and work. anyways, heres a piece i did a few weeks ago for class, i was supose to do a parody of something and chose girls gone wild, but instead Muslim girls gone western. it doesnt really read as that at all, but i still liked it and painted it anyways.

also, here are some rough sketches for my next illustration, its on guantanamo bay and how they are going to shut it down, but no one knows what will happen to the detainees.
